The 2011 World Series of Poker rolls on and several event awarded braceles earlier in the week.  The first $1k NL Event drew a massive field and there is a new Omaha Hi-Lo World Champion.  In addition, the $1,500 NL Six Max event saw an epic comeback victory.

Sean Getzwiller Wins First $1k NL Event of Year

A total of 4,178 players turned out for the first $1,000 NL Hold’em Event of the year.  This was a small 3% drop over the first $1k NL event in 2010.  Jon Turner led this event for the first two days and Turner would make the final table.

Odette Tremblay was the 2nd woman to make a WSOP final table this year, but she quickly fell in 9th place.  Jon Turner had a stellar run in this event, but he fell short of the bracelet, finishing in 3rd place.  The heads-up match between Sadan Turker and Sean Getzwiller lasted nearly 6 hours as the two battled back and forth.  In the end, Turker ran A-9 into pocket fives and could not catch.

Matt Perrins Spends 45 Minutes Learning Lowball and Wins a Bracelet

The $1,500 2-7 Lowball Event drew 275 players looking to take the first bracelet in this game at the 2011 WSOP.  Heading into the final table of this event Matt Perrins led a field that included Jason Mercier, Bernard Lee, and Chris Bjorin.

Perrins claimed that he learned the game just 45 minutes prior to the event after watching some videos on Youtube.  Whether or not this is true is debatable but he did make heads-up play against Chris Bjorin for the bracelet.  Bjorin trailed at the start of the heads-up match and could never recover.

Matt Perrins takes the $1,500 2-7 Lowball Event and wins both the bracelet and $102,105 in prize money.

Geffrey Klein Pulls Off Epic Comeback to Take Event #10 Bracelet

Going into the final table of the $1,500 NL Hold’em Six-Handed Event, Jeffrey Papola was the story.  He took the $5,000 Six-Handed bracelet in 2010 and finished 2nd in the $2,500 Six-Handed Event.  He made the final table of this event along with Anthony Spinella and David Vamplew, the chip leader at the start of the final table.

Papola would ultimately fall in 3rd place in the event.  He was all-in on the turn with top pair against a flush draw for Eddie Blumenthal.  Blumenthal spiked his flush on the river and Geffrey Klein was the only man standing between Blumenthal and the bracelet.

At first glance, it appeared a foregone conclusion that Blumenthal would win.  After all, he had 7.85 Million in chips to just 800k for Klein.  But then again, that is why we play until someone has all the chips.

Klein proceeded to double up a couple of times and as he said in a later interview, he could then play poker.  Klein proceeded to chip away at Blumenthal until Klein held his own 2:1 chip lead.  In the final hand, the two were racing with Blumenthal all-in with sevens against A-K for Klein.  Both held a diamond, with the Ad in Klein’s hand.

The flop blanked both, but the Kd on the turn gave Klein the lead and left Blumenthal with just two out due to the face Klein had the better flush draw.  The river fell the Qd to make the nut flush for Klein and cap off his epic comeback win.

Geffrey Klein wins his first WSOP bracelet and $544,388.
