2011 World Series of Poker In Review

The 2011 World Series of Poker is officially in the books.  After nearly 8 weeks of almost non-stop poker action, we have 58 new bracelet winners and one more still to award in November at the November Nine.

With the November Nine now reached, players will have to wait until the WSOP Europe for another shot at a bracelet.

This WSOP saw a ton of big stories and new names emerge to the forefront of poker.  Before the WSOP event began, Sam Barnhart was the first bracelet winner of 2011 after taking the WSOP Circuit National Championship.  Jake Cody took the first open bracelet when he won the $25,000 Heads-Up Championship.

Allen Bari proved he can walk the walk as well as talk smack when he defeated Maria Ho heads-up for the $5,000 NL Hold’em bracelet.  Eugene Katchalov won his first bracelet in the $1,500 Stud Event and Matt Perrins took the $1,500 NL 2-7 Lowball bracelet after just spending 30 minutes on Youtube prior to the event learning the game.

Brian Rast won the first of two bracelets in the $1.500 Pot-Limit Hold’em Event.  Bertrand Grospellier played in his first stud tournament in the $10k Stud World Championship and took the bracelet.

After finishing runner-up in the $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Event, Ben Lamb took down the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha World Championship.  Jason Mercier won his second career bracelet in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Six-Handed Event.

Phil Hellmuth was denied on three separate occasions for bracelet #12.  He finished runner-up in the $10k NL 2-7 Lowball Championship, won by John Juanda.  He then finished 2nd in the $10k Stud 8 or Better Championship, won by Eric Rodawig.  Finally, he finished 2nd in the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship to Brian Rast.  Rast was the only two-time winner this series.

Marsha Wolak won the $1,000 Ladies Championship in the first, and only, ladies final table to feature a male player.  James Hess became the youngest Seniors Event winner in history at 50 years of age in the largest Seniors Event in poker history.

David Binger finally won his first bracelet of his career when he took down the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Event.

Over the course of 8 days, the field in the 2011 WSOP Main Event was reduced from 6,865 players to just nine.  Ben Lamb and Phil Collins are the two big names still left in the field and Martin Staszko leads.  The players will come back in November to play to heads-up and then the bracelet.

The WSOP Europe will kick off on October 7th and run through October 19th.  This year, the event will be moved to Cannes France and held at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière.  Players will have to wait until then for another shot at a bracelet this year.  We will be back at that time to bring you news from the events.
