2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Andre Akkari
On Monday, André Akkari won Event #43 of the 2011 WSOP, the $1,500 No Limit Hold’Em Event. He took home $675,117 as well as his first ever World Series bracelet. Akkari came out on top of a starting field of 2857 players. This bracelet win is only the second time a Brazilian player has ever won a WSOP bracelet.
Akkari was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Akkari was not always interested in poker. He was interested in computers and this lead to him becoming a flash designer for websites. It was during a project for a company involved in the poker industry that Akkari began to take an interest in the game.
Akkari was involved in designing the e-commerce proposal for a start up company and as part of the research he downloaded online poker software. He started to play at the play money tables at first. Along with his play money practice he began to read strategy books.
Akkari was still hesitant about spending money and so he began to play freerolls. He kept track of the many freeroll tournaments and began to build himself a small bankroll. After several years Akkari had yet to make any large scores.
The beginning of his upswing started on a visit to Vegas with some friends. He won a small buy in tournament for $500 a few hours after he landed. He then took this $500 win and entered a larger tournament and made a $22,000 score. This was the beginning of the Akkari’s road to success.
Akkari final tabled two Bellagio Cup events in 2006. His next big score came in 2008 when he came in 2nd at the EPT Grand Final, Monte Carlo for $75,004. That same year he cashed twice at the WSOP in the $1,500 Limit Hold’Em and the $1,500 No Limit Hold’Em.
In 2009 Akkari cashed three times at the WSOP including a 27th place finish in the 2009 World Series Of Poker – Europe, London 10K Main Event for which he took home $42,729. Akkari was also signed as a member of Team PokerStars. He was chosen for his popularity in South America as well as his tournament success.
Akkari’s biggest win came in taking down WSOP 2011 Event 43. The win came after an epic heads-up battle that was one of the most exciting spectacles of the series so far. It was a long, heavily spectacles heads-up match that will go down as one of the year’s best matches.
The $1,500 No-Limit events are known to attract large fields. Event 43 had 2,857 players. Some of the notable names in the running included: Jonathan Little, Neil Channing, Gavin Griffin, Gavin Smith, Allen Kessler and Kathy Liebert. After play ended on Day 1 almost 2,500 players were eliminated.
Day 2 saw the field reduced to a 34 players. Akkari ended Day 2 with 144,000 in chips. After a long final table it was down to heads-up between Nachman Berlin and André Akkari. Day 3 concluded with Nachman Berlin having 9,465,000 in chips and Akkari having 3,400,000.
Akkari was trailing on Day 4 but after several hours of heads-up play he had caught up. Akkari eventually chipped up to 10,580,000 in chips and had Nachman Berlin down to 2,285,000 in chips. The final hand of the event saw Berlin shove all in from the button holding Ad-8d. Akkari called holding Kd-Jh. The flop came Ks-Qs-3s, the turn was a Kh and the river was a 5s. The crowd went wild and Akkari had won his first WSOP bracelet.
