2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Andy Frankenberger
Andy Frankenberger recently took down WSOP Event #28, the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Event. Frankenberger came out on top of 2,500 entrants to win. This was the first bracelet for Frankenberger who has previously had success in the WPT where he won WPT season 9 Legends of Poker event. For his win at the WSOP he took home $599,153 along with the bracelet.
Frankenberger, 38, hails from NYC, New York. He graduated from Duke University with a degree in economics. After graduating from Duke he went to Wall St. where he worked for JP Morgan and BNP Paribas as an equity derivatives trader.
After 14 years working in the financial industry, Frankenberger quit. He was not satisfied with his job and was looking for new challenges. He tried his hand at poker and loved it.
Frankenberger says that he has an uncanny ability to remember long and complex numbers. This skill has translated into being able to remember specific hands an opponent has played hours after the hand is over. Frankenberger is able to use this information to his advantage when he is later involved in a hand with the person, even though it may be hours or even days later.
Frankenberger started playing small tournaments then progressed to larger buy in events. It was only last year that he began playing full time on the circuit. In his first year playing tournament poker he won two major events, the $5K WPT Legends of Poker Main Event for $750,000 and the $2K Venetian Deepstack for $162,110. These wins garnered Frankenberger the 2010 World Poker Tour Player of the Year award.
WSOP event 28 saw a huge number of entrants. There were the famous faces such as Liv Boeree, Freddy Deeb and Phil Laak as well as many others hoping for the bracelet win. The original starting field of 2,500 was reduced to 349 for day 2.
Frankenberger started Day 2 with 25,300 in chips. By the end of Day 2 he had moved into 4th place with 764,000 chips. He was still chasing chip leader Steven Merrifield who had 1,000,025 chips. The field had now been reduced to 28 players.
On Day 3 Frankenberger made a full house to become the chip leader. Frederik Jensen opened to 34,000 from the cutoff. Frankenberger called on the button and the two men saw the flop heads-up. The flop came Jh-Qh-Ah. Jensen checked and Frankenberger bet out 55,000. Jensen called and the turn came Jc. The river was a Jd and Frankenberger turned over Ad-Kd for a full house. Jensen was later eliminated in 14th place when his AcJs ran into Joshua Evans’s Ad-Kd preflop.
When it got down to heads-up it was Joshua Evans and Andy Frankenberger. The first big pot went to Frankenberger when he three-bet Evans. The flop came 9h-2s-Jd and was checked through. The turn was 5h and both men checked. The river was a Qs and Frankenberger bet 150,000 and took down the pot.
The final hand saw Evans raise it up to 125,000 from the button and Frankenberger make the call. The flop came 5d-7h-Jh. Evans bet out 180,00 after Frankenberger checked. Frankenberger then raised him to 600,000. Evans went all in for 2.5 million chips and Frankenberger made the call.
Both men tabled their hands. Evans held Jd-Td and Frankenberger held Js-7d. Evans needing running cards to a flush or a Ten to win. The turn came a 3h and the river was a 2c and Frankenberger had now won his first bracelet.
