2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Ben Lamb
On Monday, Ben Lamb took down 2011 WSOP Event #42: the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha World Championship. The win comes only a few days after Lamb took second in event #31, the $3k Pot Limit championship. Lamb won $814,436 for his first place finish in event #42 to go along with the bracelet.
This latest win puts Lamb’s career winnings at $2,299,471. This marks the biggest score for the Tulsa, OK native. The win also places Lamb at the top of the Player of the Year race. This latest win is sure to make Lamb a familiar name within the poker industry.
Lamb dropped out of college after just one year to become a professional poker player. Lamb started playing professional in 2006, and became a fierce presence in the online poker scene. Even though as an online player he could live anywhere, he ended up moving to Vegas.
Lamb is considered a top notch Pot Limit Omaha cash game player. He is a powerful presence both online and in live cash games. It comes as no surprise that his bracelet comes in PLO. He almost won a second bracelet this year in the same game, but ended up taking second place to Sam Stein in the $3K PLO championship.
Lamb’s first big live tournament poker score came in 2006 at the 2006 Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge, Tulsa. He came in 1st for $53,671 in the 1K No-Limit event. That same month he cashed for $25,572 when he came in 12th in the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’Em event at the WSOP. Later that year he took down the 2006 United States Poker Championship, Atlantic City for $60k.
In 2009 Lamb took 14th in the Main Event and won $633,022. It was his biggest score to date. He had several decent scores during 2010, but he was going to have to wait until 2011 for his huge payday.
The first big score in the 2011 WSOP for Lamb came in the $3K Pot Limit Omaha event. He was poised to take down the event, but eventually lost to Sam Stein. Lamb did receive $259,918 for his efforts.
Next up was the $10K Pot Limit Omaha championship. Lamb was going to be up against fierce competition. Among the players in contention for a bracelet were Daniel Alaei, David Benyamine, Vanessa Selbst, Chad Brown, and Mike Sexton.
Lamb had accumulated 166,300 in chips by the end of Day 1. He was fifth in chips. Lamb started Day 2 seated at a table with several strong players including John Hennigan and Erik Seidel. By the end of Day 2 Lamb had chipped up to 809,000 in chips. Sami Kelopuro, who would end up battling Lamb heads-up, was in 3rd place with 728,000 in chips.
Day 3 had 38 players remaining. When it came down to the final table there were many tough opponents, including 3 bracelet winners. After much play the hard stop rule ended play for Day 3. Four players were left: Ben Lamb, John Shipley, Sami Kelopuro, and Christopher King.
Lamb came into Day 4 with the chip lead. He busted Christopher King in 4th place and took an even more commanding chip lead. After Sami Kelopuro busted John Shipley in 3rd place it was down to heads-up. The two men exchanged chips back and forth until the final hand. The two men got all the chips in on a flop of As-9h-3d-Qs. Kelopuro held Ac-Qc-Kd-7d and Lamb held 6s-5h-4s-2d. When a 5s fell on the river Lamb won with the straight and took down the event.
