2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Chris Viox
Chris Viox recently won his first bracelet by winning WSOP Event # 25: the $1,500 Stud 8 or Better Event. He took home $200,459 along with the bracelet. Viox ended up going heads-up against poker legend Mike Sexton and defeated the legend for the win. Viox managed to come out on top of the field of 606 players.
Viox hails from Illinois and has a total of $635,942 lifetime winnings. Before his bracelet win in the Stud Hi-Lo tournament he had two third place finishes at the WSOP. One was in the 2006 2k Pot Limit Hold’em championship and the other was in the 2008 $1500 Razz.
Viox plays online as well as traveling the tournament circuit. His online tournament winnings total over half a million. Though Viox has been playing for a number of years, he faced stiff competition in event number 25 from both young and old pros.
Seasoned pros Mickey Appleman, Barry Greenstein and Cyndy Violette as well as the new breed of players including Jason Mercier and Mike DeMichelle were all playing for the bracelet. Viox knew he was in for a tough challenge.
The possibility of winning the bracelet was a real motivator. Viox recalls coming very close on a few different occasions. Two of the times, Viox recalls, he had a commanding chip lead when it was down to three handed play only to let it slide away and lose his shot at glory.
Day one saw stud specialist Cyndy Violette in the lead. Along with her was High Stakes Cash game pro Tom Dwan, and ESPN commentator Norman Chad. Viox had chipped up to 15th place by the end of the fist day.
At the end of day three Viox had improved his stack but was behind several players including Cory Zeidnam and Norman Chad. Mike Sexton, the man who would eventually get heads-up with Voix, was struggling near the bottom of the chip count.
With the blinds continuing to increase, players were dropping off. Viox managed to work his way up to the chip leader. The final table included one famous player that had the crowd excited. Mike Sexton was there and he was looking for his second bracelet. His first bracelet came in the exact same event back in 1989.
Viox and Sexton battled until the day ended and they then continued on day 4. Viox started day 4 with a 3:1 chip lead over Sexton. With the blinds at 60,000-120,000 any pot could dramatically change the outcome of the tournament. Viox managed to defeat Sexton by making two pair to defeat Sextons buried 8’s.
Viox knew that Sexton was the favorite going into the match. Viox said that in addition to running well he believed he did not make any serious mistakes and this allowed him to win. He called him family as soon as he won the event to let them know the good news.
