2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Darren Woods
Darren Woods won Event #19 of the 2011 WSOP, the $2,500 Limit Hold’Em Six Handed. He took home $213,431 in prize money as well as the bracelet. This is the first WSOP bracelet for Woods. He beat out a starting field of 354 players to take down the title. Woods went up against some tough competition including Daniel Alaei, Jennifer Harman, Greg Mueller, and Terrance Chan.
Woods, 26, hails from Grimsby, England. Woods began playing online poker at 18 when he saw an offer for a free $50 dollar deposit. Woods was not a successful player at first and ended up losing for several months. During this time he graduated college with a mathematics degree. He began working as an accountant after graduating.
Woods continued playing online and eventually was successful enough that he quit his day job. Eventually Woods became so successful that he was contracted to produce online training videos.
Woods had his first tournament success at the 2007 WSOP. He cashed for $20,320 in the Main Event. He had a few more small cashes in 2007 in London tournaments. In 2009 he cashed again at the WSOP in the 2K No-Limit Hold’Em tournament. In 2010 Woods would have 3 cashes at the WSOP. He came in 12th in the 10K Limit Hold’Em championship as well as cashing in the Main Event and the 10K Heads-Up championship. Woods also cashed this year in the 10K Limit Hold’Em championship coming in 11th place in addition to his bracelet win.
Woods finished up Day 1 with 10,800 in chips. There were 124 players left who were going to return for Day 2. After play had wrapped on Day 1 Woods was in 8th place with 178,500 in chips. Twelve players were going to be returning for Day 3 to play for the bracelet.
When it came down to heads-up it was Darren Woods (1,150,000) and Kim Nguyen (1,500,000). Nguyen was looking to be the first female bracelet winner at the WSOP while Woods was looking to win his first bracelet. Woods continued to chip away at Nguyen’s stack until the final hand.
Nguyen raised on the button and Woods re-raised. Nguyen got her remaining chips in with Kc-2c. Woods was holding 4h-2h. The flop came Kh-4d-6s. The turn was a Js. Nguyen was looking to double up but the river was a 4c and Woods took down the event.
