2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Jason Lee
Chris Lee Wins took down 2011 WSOP Event #29, the $2,500 10-Game Mix Event. In addition to the bracelet he took home $254,955. He bested Brian Haveson in heads-up play to win the event. This win was all the more unusual for Lee who admits he normally only plays No-Limit Hold’Em and Pot Limit Omaha.
Lee, 24, got into poker while he was still in high school. He started small but quickly worked his way up to play the nosebleed stakes. Lee, who plays online as Genius28, could be seen playing $200/$400 No Limit Hold’Em against some of the best in the world. He frequently could be seen online going up against the toughest opponents in the world including Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius and Phil Galfond.
In addition to playing the nosebleed cash games on Full Tilt Poker, Lee also battled Daniel “KidPoker” Negreanu over at PokerStars. Lee was also known to be one of the better Heads-Up SNG players, frequently sitting at the $5500 buy ins and waiting for action.
The win in the WSOP $2,500 10-Game Mix championship is all the more important for Lee because he had yet to have any real results in live tournament play. Lee had focused almost entirely on short-handed high stakes cash games and high stakes heads-up sit and goes up until recently.
431 players entered WSOP event #29 looking to take home the title. Players such as Allen Cunningham, John D’Agostino, Joe Hachem, and recent bracelet winner John Monnette, were all vying for the top prize. After Day 1 the field was cut down to 162 players.
Lee started Day 2 with 21,850 in chips. He managed to chip up and he ended the day 113,200. On Day 2, Lee was seated at a starting table with four other players and was last in chips. Midway through the day Lee won a half million-dollar pot to put him in the lead.
The hand in question was during the Stud 8/b round and involved Shaun Deeb, Chris Lee and Travis Pearson. Lee’s board read x-x-7c-Ac-T-4-H and he had taken control of the betting on 5th street putting in the extra raises. Both Pearson and Deeb, who had been the original aggressor, were forced into check calling. Lee bet one more time on 7th street and after several agonizing minutes Deeb folded, as did Pearson.
Later, Lee won a big pot off final table chip leader Shaun Deeb during the badugi round. Deeb had made a raise and Lee called. Deeb stood pat and lee drew one. Lee check raised Deeb and both players stood pat on the second draw. On the second draw both stood pat and Lee fired out a bet. Deeb called and both men again stood pat on the third draw.
After Lee bet one last time Deeb agonized over the call. Lee used the table talk he is famous for online to elicit a crying call from Deeb. Lee took down the pot with an Ah-3c-5s-9d badugi. This pot crippled Deeb who was later eliminated in 4th place by Brian Haveson.
With the tournament down to the final three players action was stopped because of the hard-stop rule and was to resume the next day. Lee led the pack with 1.425 million in chips. Brian Haveson had 997,000 chips and Travis Pearson had 813,000. Lee later eliminated Pearson in 3rd place by when his Ad-Qh outdrew Pearson’s pocket Tens.
It finally all came down to Lee and Haveson. Lee kept up the aggression level and he won back-to-back pots in the Pot Limit Omaha round. The final hand was in the 2-7 Triple Draw round and Haveson would have to outdraw Lee’s pat Ten high. He was unable to improve and Chris “Genius28″ Lee had won his first WSOP bracelet in one of the most coveted events.
