2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier won Event #35 of the 2011 WSOP, the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Six-Max. Jason Mercier took his second bracelet with the victory. This is not the first time Mercier has won a Pot Limit Omaha event at the WSOP. His first bracelet came in 2009 in the $1500 Pot Limit Omaha event. In Event #35, Mercier came out on top of a field of 507 and won $619,575.
This latest win puts Mercier’s career earnings at $6.7 million. He also holds the distinction of being one of the most successful players currently on the tournament circuit. Mercier has won titles at the LAPC, EPT, WSOP, NAPT and countless online tournaments. He has also established himself as a high stakes cash game player to be reckoned with.
Mercier began playing online poker while still in high school in Florida. It was during his first year at Florida Atlantic University that he began to play consistently. He eventually dropped out of school and grinded low limit cash games. Over the course of 2007 he played over 2 million hands of poker on PokerStars.
He had yet to make a name for himself but that would soon change. Mercier won a satellite into the EPT San Remo. He won the event, and took home $1,372,893. From this point on Mercier was a regular on the tournament circuit. A few months later he came in 6th at the EPT Barcelona Open and won $324,946.
Less then a month later he won the European Poker Championships London High Roller event for $944,847. The string of wins continued for Mercier. Soon he was a member of PokerStars Team Online. This lead to an appearance on PokerStars Big Game. He has also appeared on High Stakes Poker.
Mercier’s latest win comes only months after he took down NAPT Uncasville High Roller Event for $246,600. These consistent wins show that Mercier is a player to be reckoned with.
Day 1 of Event #35 ended with 105 players remaining. Mercier finished Day 1 with 56,800 in chips and was in the middle of the pack. On Day 2 Mercier won a big pot and eliminated Tom Dwan in 16th place.
Dwan raised from the cutoff and was 3-bet by Mercier from the button. Dwan called and then bet his remaining chips in the dark and Mercier called. Mercier held Ad-As-4s-9d and Dwan held 3s-7c-Ts-Tc. Mercier flopped a set of Aces and the nut flush draw. A diamond on the turn had Dwan drawing dead. Mercier chipped up to 600,000 and eliminated Dawn in 16th place.
Mercier started Day 3 with 619,000 in chips. He was seated at a table with Peter Jetten, Chris Moorman, Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot, and Robert Fellner. It was certainly a tough draw.
Mercier won a huge pot when he eliminated both Devilfish and Jetten. Devilfish raised and both Jetten and Mercier called. The flop came 2d-Jd-8s and all three players got their stacks in. Mercier held Qd-9d-Tc-6c. Jetten held Ah-Ac-9s-5c and Devilish held Jc-Jh-7d-7h.
Devilfish was ahead with a set of Jacks but Mercier had flush and straight outs. The turn was the Qc giving Mercier the straight and when the river didn’t pair both Devilfish and Jetten were eliminated.
It finally came down to Hans Winzeler and Jason Mercier. When the two men started the match, Winzeler had a slight advantage having 4,125,000 chips to Mercier’s 3,490,000. The two men exchanged chip leads until the final hand. Mercier held Qc-6c-5d-3s and Winzeler held Ac-Kd-Kc-Js. The board was 9d-4s-3d giving Mercier a pair and a wrap. Winzeler had an over pair. The river was a 7 giving Mercier the straight and the win.
