2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Jason Somerville
Jason Somerville recently won 2011 WSOP Event # 20: 1,000 No-Limit Hold’em. Somerville came out on top of 3,175 players to win his first bracelet in WSOP event number #20-1K No-Limit Hold’Em. This is the fourth year that Somerville has played the WSOP and he came away with a bracelet and $ 493,091 in prize money.
Somerville comes from Stony Brook, NY. He left college to pursue poker full time. He credits his success to a good work ethic and time spent reviewing hands. One of the biggest challenges for Somerville was a huge downswing he had while still in college. He says he went on a 100K downswing but still felt confident enough in his game to leave school and pursues poker full time.
Somerville’s online winnings are $2,219,782 and his live tournament cashes add up to $1,701,697. His cash in event #20 is his largest cash to date. Before this win his largest cash was for $386,125 last years WSOP 25K Six-Max No Limit Championship.
Somerville’s prowess on the felt has lead poker great Daniel Negreanu to list him as one of the top three large field No-Limit tournament players in the world. Negreanu’s enthusiasm for Somerville led to a position as an instructor at Daniel Negreanu’s site PokerVT.
When Black Friday hit, Somerville said he was not as worried as many other online pros. He said that he was successful enough recently to wait and see what would happen for him at the WSOP.
Even though he has won close to half a million dollars and a bracelet, he is ready for more. With thirty events left, Somerville hopes he can win another bracelet. He has high hopes for the 10K Six-Max which he had great success in last year.
Somerville started day 3 of Event # 20 as the chip leader, though he did not have an overwhelming stack. In fact, at the end of the first break, Somerville had dropped to fifth place in the remaining twelve players. By the time he reached heads-up play, he had retaken the chip lead.
Heads-up play lasted one hand. The final hand of the event saw Somerville raise with pocket aces. Yashar Darian three-bet with Ks-4d. Somerville made the re-raise and was instantly met with an all in from Darian. Somerville snap called and his aces held.
