2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Matt Matros

On Saturday, Matt Matros took down Event #52 of the 2011 WSOP, the $2,500 Mixed Hold’Em (Limit/No-Limit). Matros won $303,501 in prize money in addition to winning the bracelet. This is the second WSOP bracelet for Matros. Matros won his first bracelet in 2010 in the $1,500 Limit Hold’Em championship event.

Matt Matros, 34, learned poker as a kid, but did not start playing seriously until his senior year of college. It was while he was at Yale that Matros begin to seriously study and play the game. He graduated with a degree in mathematics and entered into the corporate world.

After a few years in the corporate business world Matros decided he wanted to return to school and pursue a graduate degree in cerate writing. Matros attended Sarah Lawrence and continued playing poker recreationally. While he was working on his Masters Degree he began to play poker more seriously.

Matros is primarily a Limit Hold’Em specialist. When he graduated from Sarah Lawrence in 2004 he had decided to become a full time poker pro. While he had been successful in cash games, the decision to go pro was made easier when he came in 3rd at the 2004 Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic/WPT for $706,903.

Matros would have positive tournament results for the next few years. He has cashed in every WSOP series he has played in since 2005. Some of his more substantial scores include a 6th place finish in the 39th World Series of Poker $1,500 No Limit event for $148,875 and $189,870 for his 1st place finish in the 2010 $1,500 Limit Hold’Em event.

His success on the felt has led to Matros becoming an instructor at Cardrunners. His overall total tournament winnings to date are 1,800,000. When Matros is not playing poker he is busy finishing his first novel.

Matros was going to have some stiff competition in Event #52. There were 580 players all vying for the bracelet. Some of the players in the running were: Jimmy Fricke, Hoyt Corkins, Daniel Negreanu, Rep Porter, Terrence Chance and Michael Mizrachi.

Day 1 finished with 135 players remaining. Among the players coming back for Day 2 were Joseph Cheong, Chris Moorman, Scott Montgomery, Liz Lieu and Max Pescatori. Matros was heading into Day 2 with a stack of 24,400.

Day 2 came to a close with 9 players left. The final table would have some tough players, including Matt Hawrilenko and Noah Boeken. After some tough play it was down to heads-up between Matt Matros and Jonathan Lane. Matros had the chip lead with 3,250,000 and Lane had 1,100,000.

The final hand came during the No-Limit round. Matros opened from the button only to have Lane shove all in. Matros called holding As-Tc. Lane was holding Jd-Th. The board came Qh-Qs-5s-4s-4h and Matros had won the tournament.
