2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Matt Perrins
Matt Perrins recently won Event #9 of the 2011 WSOP, $1,500 NL 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship. He won the bracelet by besting a field of 275 entrants including Eli Elezra, Andy Bloch, and Joe Cassidy. Perrins got heads up with Swedish pro Chris Bjorin. Wining the event gave Perrins $102,105 along with the bracelet.
Perrins is from Rochdale, England, the same area where 25k HU Champ Jake Cody is from. This is not only the first bracelet for Perrins; it is a bracelet in a game he had never played before. Perrins had never played a hand of No Limit Deuce before he sat down to play the tournament.
Perrins first cash came in 2008 in the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour. This was a €100 buy in tournament. His first major cash came in July of 2009 during the IPT Venezia, Venice. He won the main event of the IPT Venezia for € 150,000.
Perrins has said that in order to learn 2-7 he studied videos that he found on Youtube. Perrins watched around thirty minutes of videos as his sole preparation for the tournament. He admits that for the first few levels of the tournament he was still figuring out the game. There were certain sports where he became involved in hands and situations that he was confused about.
What he lacked in experience he made up for with constant aggression. After a while Perrins says he picked up on similarities between his preferred game, No Limit Hold Em, and No Limit Deuce.
The final table saw such poker luminaries as Jason Mercier, Bernard Lee and Thomas Fuller. Perrins entered the table with the chip lead though Bernard Lee was close behind. When it came down to the final three, Perrins had more than half the chips in play.
Perrins busted Robin Rightmire when Perrins drew and caught a Ten low and Rightmire paired his Six. It was then heads up between Chris Bjorin and Matt Perrins. Soon after starting heads-up Perrins managed to work up to an 11-1 lead. The final hand saw Perrins move Bjorin all in. Each man drew one card. Perrins drew an Eight high and Bjorin drew a King. Perrins won his first bracelet and a huge payday along with it.
