2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Maxim Lykov

Maxim Lykov recently took down Event #53 of the 2011 WSOP, the $1K No Limit Hold’Em Event. Lykov won his first bracelet as well as taking home $ 648,880 in prize money. Lykov overcame a starting field of 2,644 players to win the bracelet.

Event #54 had a huge field including some strong pro’s. Liv Boeree, Dario Minieri, Hoyt Corkins, Lee Markholt, Erica Schoenberg, Dwyte Pilgrim and Scott Montgomery were just some of the recognizable players in attendance. This win puts Lykov’s total career winnings at $2,583,845

Lykov, 23, began playing poker while he was still a student. He was studying Engineering at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute when he became interested in playing poker. Lykov has stated that he has only ever deposited twice, both 40-dollar deposits, and has managed to run his bankroll up from that point in time.

Lykov was in his third year of college when he decided to drop out and pursue poker full time. He had only been playing poker for one year but his success was outstanding. Lykov became a pro in 2005. He was primarily an online player up until 2009. In 2009 he began to have success in the live tournament scene.

Lykov had a few decent scores in early 2009 before he hit two big cashes. His first big cash came at the 2009 WSOP where he came in 3rd in the 5K Limit Hold’Em Shootout for $145,062. A few months later he won $468,504 when he took down the EPT Kiev Main Event.

In 2011 Lykov took home  $369,490 when he came in 3rd in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure High Roller event. Later, he won $ 422,679 when he came in 4th during the EPT San Remo Main Event.

Event #54 had a huge starting field. Day 1 was split into Day 1a and Day 1b. Lykov played on Day 1b and finished up the day with 38,400 in chips. There were 638 players heading into Day 2. Lykov finished up Day 2 with 338,000. The field had been reduced to 44 players.

Lykov would start Day 3 15th in chips. By the time the final table was reached at the end of the day, Lykov had amassed a stack of 3,875,000 chips and would start Day 4 as the chip leader.  Lykov managed to keep the pressure on and dominated the final table.

It came down to heads-up between Dror Michaelo (4,650,000) and Lykov (9,000,000). Lykov won a huge hand when he flopped the nuts. The action went as follows: Lykov made a raise from the button and Michaelo called. The flop came Qh-9c-8d. Michaelo led out and Lykov called. The turn was a 6c and Michaelo led out again and again Lykov called. The river was a Kc. Michaelo bet one last time and Lykov called without hesitation. Michaelo tabled Kh-7x and Lykov tabled Jc-Th.

The final hand saw Michaelo get his remaining stack in with Kc-5d. Lykov tabled Ah-Ks. The flop came Ac-Qc-Qd. The turn was a 9s and the river was a 7s.Lykov had won the tournament and his first ever WSOP bracelet.
