Mitch Schock - $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em / Omaha Bracelet Winner

Schock, 40, is a professional poker player from North Dakota. This will be the first time a player from North Dakota has ever won a WSOP event. Schock said this was another reason that the win meant so much to him. He says that there were many people back in Bismarck cheering for him.

Schock has been playing poker for the last 17 years. He turned pro before poker became mainstream and he has seen the dramatic changes in the events. Schock remembers when an event would be considered huge if there were a few hundred players. Now events can have thousands of entrants.

Schock has said that he does not plan to splurge with his winnings. He has a family in North Dakota and he understands the swingy nature of tournament poker. Before this recent score, Schock’s biggest score came in the 2006 WSOP when he took home $329,865 for coming in 29th place in the Main Event. At the time he was quoted as saying he would buy a new-used car.

Schock has had other impressive scores at the WSOP. In the 2009 WSOP $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event he came in 3rd and took home $100,165. He also took home $24,621 for coming in first in the $500 Pot Limit Omaha event at the 2010 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza III.

In event #39 Schock was going up against some tough opponents, including Bill Chen, Annette Obrestad, Dave Ulliott, Lex Veldhuis and Jeff Lisandro. At the end of Day 1 Schock was 2nd in chips with 121,600. Chip leader David Williams had 137,700 in chips with 131 players left in the event.

Day 2 saw the field reduced to 22 players. Schock had a stack of 158,000 chips. He was going to have some work to do in Day 3 to catch up. Chip leaders going into Day 3 included David Lestock with 452,000 in chips, Cameron New with 448,000 in chips and Scott Clements with 359,000.

On Day 3 Schock took down a huge pot when James Vanneman 4-bet Schock all in from the button with 7x-6x and was called by Schock who held pocket Aces. The Aces held and Schock doubled though Vanneman. Schock made it to the final table second in chips with 648,000.

When it finally came down to heads-up, Schock was up against Rodney Brown. Schock had the chip lead but the two men battled back and forth and exchanged chip leads. A big pot during the Pot Limit Hold’Em round put the men at almost even stacks. Schock held Ad-Tx and Brown held Jh-Tc.  The two men got it all in on a flop of 3s-Ts-8h. Schock won the pot and now held 2.2 million in chips to Brown’s 2.3 million. The final hand was in the PLO round. The two men got it all in preflop. Brown held As-Ts-9d-8s and Schock held Ac-Ad-6d-3c. Brown was unable to outdraw Schock, and Schock took down the tournament.
