2011 WSOP Bracelet Winner Profile – Sam Stein
Sam Stein won Event # 31 of the 2011 WSOP, the $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Event. Stein came out on top of 685 players who were all looking for the bracelet. In addition to the bracelet, Stein took home $420,802. This win also puts Stein at the head of the list of players vying for the highly coveted WSOP Player of the Year Award.
Stein, who is only 23 years old, had yet to win a major tournament until his win in event #31. That did not stop him from amassing an incredible $4 million in tournament winnings over the past two years. Stein has made many final tables and just recently came in 3rd place at the WSOP $10K Pot Limit Hold’Em championship, taking home $ 264,651.
Stein’s first big cash came in 2009 when he took second at the LAPC 1K No-Limit championship. He later went on to final table events at the NAPT, WPT, and EPT. Stein then cashed for $522,306 when he took second place in the NAPT 5K No Limit 2010 Deep Stack Extravaganza, Las Vegas.
While Stein, who goes by the online screen name KingKobeMVP, has had great success online he is also very comfortable with live play. Stein said he began playing live cash games in order to better prepare himself for the early stages of tournament play where he would have to play deepstacked poker.
Stein was going to be up against some stiff competition in his quest for a bracelet. Among the players in event #31 were Frank Kassela, John Juanda, Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu and many other highly skilled pros.
At the end of Day 1 there were only 138 players remaining. Stein started Day 2 with 57,600 in chips. Stein continued to chip up during the day, including a hand where he busted Noah Schwartz. Stein opened it to 3K holding Qx-Jx-Tx-9x. A player in mid position cold called and then Noah Schwartz three bet from the button to 13K. Stein called and the player in between folded.
The flop came Qd-5c-3c. Stein check called 17K and the turn was a 9d. Stein lead out for 50K and Schwartz moved all in. Stein was holding Ac-Ax-4x-2x with either the 4 or 2 being clubs. This gave him plenty of outs. The river was the Qc giving him the flush but it gave Stein the boat and sent Swartz out and over to the rail.
Stein ended the day as the chip leader, having accumulated a stack of 843,000 chips. Day 3 saw Stein at a table with online pro Christian Harder as well as Brock Parker. Stein lost a few flips and his stack cut down to 640,000 by the time of the final table.
Stein regained some of his chips when he eliminated Adam Junglen in 5th place. The board came 8c-5d-3h and the two players got all the chips in. Junglen held Qc-Td-9d-8s and Stein held Jd-8h-5h-4d. Junglen had lots of outs but the turn and river came 2s-Ac and he was sent home in 5th place.
Stein finally got heads-up with Ben Lamb. Stein held a two-to-one advantage over Lamb. The final hand saw Stein turn the nut straight and get it all in against Lamb who was holding a lower straight. Stein took down the event and is now the owner of his first ever WSOP bracelet.
