“A Closer Look” at the 2011 WSOP Main Event Day 5 Chip Leaders
Day 5 of the 2011 WSOP finished with a new group of chip leaders. Below are the five chip leaders and a bit about each one:
David Bach – 4,706,000
David Bach, 39, is a professional poker pro from Athens, Georgia. Bach has career winnings of $2.8 million. Interestingly, this will be the first time that he has ever cashed in the Main Event. Bach is more of a mixed game specialist. His first cash came in the 1997 WSOP in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud event. He also cashed twice in the 2005 WSOP in the $1K No Limit event as well as taking home $ 88,680 for coming in 5th in the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’Em Event. Bach has cashed 11 times total at the WSOP.
Bach has cashed in the WSOP in 2006, 2008,2009,2010 and 2011. He came in 2nd this year in the $5K Pot Limit Omaha High Low, 15th in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E as well as coming in 3rd in the $2,500 Deuce to Seven Triple Draw.
Bach’s crowing achievement has been his 2009 win in the $50K H.O.R.S.E. He won $1,276,806 for the prize. If he wins the Main Event he will join Scotty Nguyen as the only other player to win both events.
Bach admits that No Limit is far from his strong point. But he says that the No Limit events, and the Main Event in particular, pay well, so he has focused his attention on them.
Pius Heinz – 4,699,000
Pius Heinz hails from Euskirchen, Germany. He is a student who began playing poker in 2007. He has had only one significant cash so far, but it was a big one. He came in 7th in Event # 48 $1,500 No Limit Hold’Em. He cashed for $83,286.
Kyle Johnson – 4,654,000
Kyle Johnson comes from Edmonton, Canada. His first big score came in 2008 when he cashed for $17,495 at the British Columbia Poker Championships. Johnson has never cashed at the WSOP before.
Johnson has seen to be very aggressive, as the following hand will show. A player from middle position made it 47K and got one caller, Johnson made it 125k from the small blind. Max Heinzelmann was in the big blind and made another raise, to 251K. It then folded back to Johnson who made it 625k. Heinzelmann thought for a while and finally called.
The flop came Qc-8c-8d and Johnson lead out for 300K. Heinzelmann made it 755K and Johnson went all in. Heinzelmann folded and Johnson turned over the Qd-9d. This hand put him over 4 million in chips.
Phil Collins – 4,109,000
Phil Collins resides in South Carolina. He got his start in poker while a freshman in college. He graduated from University of South Carolina in 2007 with a degree in Business Administration.
Collins was originally an Online MTT and SNG grinder. He amassed over $2.5 million in winnings under the screen name USCphildo. Collins then decided to transition to live cash and travel the circuit.
Collins has had 8 total WSOP cashes. His first came in 2008 in the $2K No Limit Hold’Em tournament. He cashed for a total 4 times in the 2008 WSOP. He cashed once in 2009 and twice in 2010. Collins also cashed this year’s in the $1,500 No Limit Championship. His total WSOP earnings are $48,769.
Ben Lamb – 4,032,000
Ben Lamb has caught the attention of many in the poker world. The 26-year-old native of Tulsa, Oklahoma has been on a heater this year. He has cashed 4 times this year, for a total of $1,331,832 million. Lamb has made three final tables, including one where he took home a bracelet. He came in 2nd in the $3K Pot Limit Omaha, 1st in the $10K Pot Limit Omaha and 8th in the $50K 8-Game Poker Players Championship.
Lamb went pro in 2004. His busted his initial seven deposits, all $100 shots. The eighth time he deposited $100 he ran good. He turned that initial $100 dollars into almost $100K in less than two weeks. He was soon playing nosebleed Pot Limit Omaha.
With his deep run in the Main Event, Lamb is also in a race for player of the year. Depending on his finish in the Main Event he will be able overtake Phil Hellmuth and win the Player of the Year award. Even thought Pot Limit Omaha is Lamb’s specialty, he is looking to take home the ultimate WSOP bracelet.
