“A Closer Look” at the Day 7 Chip Leaders of the 2011 WSOP Main Event

We have a new set of chip leaders heading into the final day of the 2011 WSOP.  Below are profiles of the top three in chips and how they go here.

Anton Makievskyi leads the field going into Day 8 play.

Anton Makievskyi – 21,045,000

Makievskyi is a 21-year-old Ukrainian poker player. Makievskyi is a student and only got his Visa a week before the start of the tournament. Makievskyi explains that he originally came only to play the Main Event and perhaps some cash games. If Makievskyi wins the Main Event he will be the 5th Ukrainian to win a bracelet at the WSOP this year. Makievskyi got his enormous chip stack partially due to wining the biggest pot of the series. He raised with Kd-Js and flopped a full house. Chris Moore flopped trips with an Ace kicker and they got all the chips in. Moore could not catch an Ace and Makievskyi won a monster pot.

Eoghan O’Dea – 19,050,000

O’Dea is the son of Irish poker pro Donnacha O’Dea. Donnacha made the final table twice, as well as having a long list of other poker accomplishments. Eoghan has his own set of accomplishments as well. He has twice cashed for six figures: 2009 WPT Marrakech Main Event where he came in 2nd for $ 388,532 and in 2008 Sky Sports Poker Million VII where he came in 2nd for $ 260,000.

O’Dea won two large pots with pocket pairs. One was against Ben Lamb. Lamb opened to 206K from the cutoff and O’Dea made it 720K from the small blind. Lamb 4-bet to 1.5 million and O’Dea shipped for 6.135 million. Lamb called and the hands were turned over. Lamb had pocket Jacks and O’Dea had pocket Kings. The Kings held and O’Dea doubled up.

O’Dea next took down a big pot and also eliminated Andrew Hinrichsen in 23rd place. Ryan Lenaghan raised to 350k from UTG and O’Dea called in the hijack. Hinrichsen made it 900K to go from the small blind. It folded to O’Dea who made it 2 million to go. Hinrichsen moved all in for 8 million. The hands were turned over and O’Dea had pocket Kings and Hinrichsen had Ad-Kc. The Kings held and O’Dea won another huge pot.

Khoa Nguyen – 16,435,000

Khoa Nguyen, 29, hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Nguyen is a businessman who just recently began playing seriously. Nguyen has a degree in electrical engineering and has worked as an engineer in the past.

Nguyen cashed twice in the 2010 WSOP. He cashed in two $1,500 No Limit events (#8, #11). Nguyen also cashed this year in event #45 the $1,000 No Lit Hold’Em. Nguyen has had some good luck this tournament and has also played aggressively as is seen in the following hand: Nguyen raised to 85k from middle position and it folded to Mitchell Cogert in the big blind. Cogert 3-bet to 250K and Nguyen moved all in. Cogert called and turned over pocket Kings. Nguyen had Ad-Td.  The flop came 4c-6c-7d and it looked like Cogert was going to double up but an Ace on the turn gave Nguyen the lead. Cogert could not catch a King on the river and was sent home.
