Basic BlackJack Rules

These rules will certainly help you to get started but the quickest way to learn BlackJack is to take a hands-on approach and play a few hands. In BlackJack you only have one person to beat, the dealer. Your goal when playing is to achieve a total from your cards that is more than that of the dealer yet does not go over 21. The number cards (2-10) count at face value. All picture cards (Jack, Queen and King) count as 10. Aces can count as either 1 or 11 depending upon how your hand stands.

You start a hand by placing a bet in the circle in front of you. Once the bet is placed the dealer will deal two cards to each one of the players one card at a time. Your two cards are dealt face up. Only the dealer’s first card is dealt face up, the second is dealt face down.

Now that you have your two cards you have a decision to make based upon their total. You can either ‘Hit’ or ‘Stand’. If you choose to ‘Hit’ the dealer will give you another card to add to the two cards you already have. You can ‘Hit’ as many times as you like as long as your total is 21 or under. If you go over 21 then you bust and the dealer takes the bet. If you ‘Stand’ you decide to stick with the cards that you have. However there is one exception. If the first two cards you are dealt add up to 21 then you have no decision to make. You have BlackJack and your hand automatically stands. To get BlackJack you must be dealt an ace and a card valued at ten as your first two cards.

When you are happy with your cards and have chosen to stand the dealer turns over his face down card. The dealer at this stage has no choice on how to act. If the total of the dealer’s two cards is less than 17 the dealer has to take another card. If the dealer’s two cards total 17 or more the dealer has to stand.

There are now four possible outcomes. If after the dealer has finished your hand is closer to 21 than the dealers then you double your money by receiving your initial bet back plus the same amount again from the dealer. If both you and the dealer have the same total the hand is declared a ‘Push’ and your bet is returned. If you get BlackJack and beat the dealer you will get your initial bet back plus one and a half times your initial bet back from the dealer. However if both you and the dealer get BlackJack the hand is considered a ‘Push’. The final possible outcome is that the dealer beats your hand and takes your bet.
