Reaction to All In
One situation that you should always be prepared for is when your opponent goes All In at the poker table. This will happen sooner or later and maybe more than once, so you better be prepared for it when it does.
In a poker tournament, your main goal is of course always to outlast your opponents. Often, sadly enough, players at a table get too nervous when someone goes all in. Maybe they weren’t at all expecting it, maybe they think their cards is good enough when they aren’t or – even worse – the other way around. To not realize how good your hand is can get you kicked out of a game that you should have been the winner of. To get nervous should be avoided if possible, since it makes you act irrationally. You could practice by playing poker online, then you will be prepared when it happens in real life. Actually, the best thing that you can do if someone goes All In in a poker tournament, is to gang up on him. For a brief moment, you and the other players have to collaborate, even though it might not feel natural in the beginning.
If you think about it mathematically you have a much better chance of getting rid of the person going All In buy teaming up against him or her. It is all about the odds. The more people that are involved in the hand, the better. Always call, in this scenario. You never know if the person who has gone All In did it out of desperation or because he actually has a great hand. Be sure to look at his stack of chips, and the size of it. If it is big, then he might not be bluffing. But if it is small, then it is likely that he gives the game one last, big chance with the risk of losing it all. Because he knows that if he wins he will have a much greater pot than he had before. So always call it, and make sure that you are all up for trying to take him down. It is enough with just a look or a nod, so that you’ll all know that you will work together on this round.
But be respectful, even though you are trying to get someone out of a game. It supposed to be fun after all, and you want to have people to play against the next time you feel like taking a game of poker…
