Introduction to Bluffing in Poker

In poker, bluffing means that you have to bet or raise, in the situation where you know that you do not have the best hand at the table. The main objective of bluffing is to scare your opponents so that they are going to fold their cards, even if they may have a better hand than you do. Winning at both online and live poker is going to depend on how well you bluff and how often you are going to perform this strategy.

Bluffing doesn't always work.

Pure Bluff or Stone Cold Bluff

A pure bluff is a bet or raise which is being made with a hand that has little or absolutely no chance of improving. The pure bluff is going to be made only if a player can believe that he can win the pot by convincing all the other opponents to fold their cards.

Compared to the semi-bluff, a pure bluff is considered to be a bit more risky to complete.

Semi-Bluff Information

The semi-bluff is very similar to the normal/pure bluff except for the fact that it is possible that your hand can improve to the winning hand by the river. This way there are going to be two different ways a player can win the pot: by improving your hand by the river,  or by having your opponents fold.

Short Bluffing Tips

-          Bluffing just for the sake of bluffing is never considered a good thing and you will see a good percentage of these backfire. Right after you have been caught bluffing is definitely considered to be the worst time to bluff again, because you are going to be very predictable.

-          Don’t try and bluff calling stations as the bluff will not work

-          Don’t bluff too often.  Players will play back at you and reduce your odds of a successful bluff

-          Always mix bluffing strategies in order to stay out of a pattern

Overall, bluffing can be a weapon and when used correctly, it will prove to be very profitable. It’s going to be up to you to get the feel of the game and understand what the exact best moments to bluff are. Bluffing too often is going to make you very predictable and the other players can start seeing patterns in your play. And if you don’t bluff at all you are definitely going to give away a lot of pots.
