Omaha Hi-Lo Poker Rules

Omaha Hi-Lo Poker is one of the most popular version of the game Poker. Basically, it is a community card game where in every player is dealt four cards face down, followed by five community cards dealt face up in the middle of the table or board. Generally, the five community cards may be used by each player in the event.

Normally, Omaha Hi-Lo Poker is played with a dealer button to note who the dealer would be if in the event the casino were not rendering one for the table. Likely, the button rotates clockwise around the table between every hand. This is very significant as the dealer is the last one to act, and therefor has the largest advantage for that particular hand.

Objective of Omaha Hi-Lo Poker

In general, the objective of Omaha Hi-Lo Poker is to make a High hand using any two out of four pocket cards and three out of five community cards, and a Low hand using any two out of four pocket cards and three out of five community cards.

More often than not, 50% of the pot must be given to the best High hand and 50% of the pot must be given to the best Low hand. Basically, if there is no qualifying Low hand, the whole pot must be given to the best High hand nonetheless.

Omaha Hi-Lo Forced Bets

Ante

Occasionally, Omaha Hi Lo has an ante, normally only in tournament plays where every player must put a minimal amount in the pot before the start of every hand. Oftentimes, ante is 1/10 of the low limit bet size. And generally, it does not count toward any future bets.

Blinds

In the rules of Omaha Hi Lo, there should be two forced bets in each hand. These forced bets are called blinds. Basically, there is a small blind, which is 1/2 of the low limit bet size, and a big blind, which is equal to the low limit bet size.

Prior to the beginning of the hand, the player to the direct left of the dealer button is impelled to post the small blind, and the player to the left of that person is impelled to post the big blind. Such bets oftentimes count towards that player’s first round bet, and are are actually considered as live.
