Example of showdown hands for Texas Holdem Poker
An example of showdown hands:
- Player A has a pair of aces with a king as high card kicker.
- Player B also has a pair of aces but he’s only got a queen kicker and thus will lose to Player A.
- Player C holds three of a kind. His pocket nines (hole card pairs are known as pocket pairs) have matched with the communal nine and given him a strong three of a kind. He is in the lead.
- Player D however, has and even stronger hand! Using the nine, ten and jack he has made a straight (eight to queen).
- Lastly, player E with his same-suit diamond hand uses the three diamonds on the board and makes a flush, winning the pot!
In the world of poker, there is a lot of terminology that might seem hard do catch up with for a beginner. There are plenty of nicknames, expressions and abbreviations that takes a while to learn, and of course there are also different kinds of poker slang, depending on where and with whom you are playing. As it wasn’t tricky enough in the beginning!
Here are some reminders of the most common names of pokerhands:
“Pocket rockets” is what you call two aces. This is pretty much the best hand you can have before the flop. No professional poker player would misunderstand you if you were talking about “pocket rockets”. They can also be called “Bullets” or “American Airlines”. (AA = American Airlines. )
If you have one Ace and one King instead, then they can be called “Anna Kournikova”, and the reason for that is fairly mean. See, if someone gets an Ace and a King, it is easily happened that they are overestimating the cards. Some people say that Anna Kournikova is like that; looks great, but never wins. Another name that could be used is “Big slick”.
A pair of Queens could be called various fairly non-feministic names such as “Four tits”, “Big pair”, “Dolly Parton”, and so on. Some people, particularly when playing poker online, even say “Hilton sisters” or “Sigfried and Roy”…
The jack and the king in combination has a few kind of sweet names: “Harry Potter”, and “People who need love”, for example.
Less sweet are the name of Ace and Eight – Dead man’s hand – since that is what “Wild Bill” were holding when he was killed. He was shot do death.
“Doyle Brunson” is what 10 and 2 is called, since that is what Doyle Brunson won the WSOP with, no less than two times!
