Online Poker – The Art of Multi-tabling

Due to the increase in sophistication in the software of online poker sites over the past few years, playing on more than one table is now a reality. But far too many people jump into multi-tabling and end up getting their fingers burnt due to either not being technically proficient or because the reduced thinking time represents a real problem.

So how do you go about playing poker on more than one table? How do these people play as many as twenty at a time and still make money? Well of course the presence of rakeback assists you tremendously in being able to make money whilst playing multiple tables.

In fact this is one of the primary reasons as to why people multi-table. They have become known as “rakeback pro’s” as they are essentially playing for the rakeback payment at the end of the week or month. There are arguments both for and against multi-tabling. The detractors claim that you cannot concentrate on more than one table properly. They also say that you cannot enhance your poker game in this way and this suffers as a result.

Both of these claims are perfectly true, but there is a trade off here with not being able to concentrate to your optimal level per table and making money. You have to ask yourself a very serious question, are you more interested in enhancing your poker game or are you interested on making more money than what you are now?

Because these two things do not necessarily go hand in hand! I know several poker players personally who earn thousands of dollars a month in rakeback who do nothing more than break even in the actual games themselves. But this does not mean that you can just go and jump into playing eight tables. Going from one table to two and from two to three and then four will be a far better way to end up playing numerous tables than simply wading in.

You will definitely need to play tighter the more tables that you play. What you don’t want to be doing is to have too many tough post flop and pre-flop situations as your amount of thinking time will be seriously reduced. Also one of the arguments put forward by the detractors that your concentration per table will be lower also fails to apply to players who cannot even concentrate fully on one table.

If like millions of others, you suffer from poor concentration levels then would it really make any difference to be playing more tables? This may seem counter intuitive but the mere act of playing more tables may just galvanise your concentration levels. But if you want to succeed at multi-tabling you need to do several things. Firstly you need to have a good idea if you are beating your current level or not.

This means being ahead by at least 3bb/100 over at least 10,000 hands. But even this sample size is still relatively small and 50,000 hands would give you a far better picture. Then you can take on a second table and see how that goes. Once again play another series of 10,000 hands and see if splitting into two affects your earn rate.

If it doesn’t then try three….rinse and repeat and move on. Playing multiple tables well takes experience as many of the decisions that will be correct “multi-tabling” decisions may not necessarily be correct when playing a single table. Once again this may seem strange and difficult to understand but essentially you are not playing the same game when you are playing eight tables as you are when you are playing one. Playing multiple tables is a bit like building up your physical fitness, it takes time, good planning and hard work.
