Winning Texas Holdem Strategies and Tips

Probably anyone can easily learn how to play Texas Holdem poker and its derivatives – Limit, No-Limit and Pot-Limit Texas Holdem. In fact, it usually takes less than three hours to teach your friend play this fascinating game – guide him through basic game rules and suggest some simple strategies. That is exactly what attracts so many players from almost all countries of the world. However, many novice players often underestimate the importance of some niceties of the game. Some try to learn the rules thoroughly and miss strategy, some put their emphasis onto the strategy and forget about bankroll management and other financial aspects.

In order to help novice players avoid most common mistakes, I have created this list of strategies and tips, based on the analysis of most frequent newbie mistakes. Read them thoroughly and you will definitely find at least a couple of things you didn’t think about, when playing Texas Holdem poker. Well, all you need to do then – just learn it and don’t repeat these mistakes in the future. Don’t worry, many novice players make just the same mistakes for very long time. In fact, it took me about five months to stumble over all of the following mistakes and learn the strategies I provide in this article dedicated to both Texas Holdem strategy and some common newbie mistakes. If you miss one, or several points of this article – don’t get upset. You’ll either find another, more comprehensive explanation in other articles of our Texas Holdem school, or understand the meaning of some points, when playing Texas Holdem for certain time. Remember that only learning and patience turns a newbie into a winning poker professional. And it takes time.

1. Remember the major object of the game – you play to win money and that’s it. Hence, in order to enjoy the game, you have to start winning and gain joy from both victories and income you will make. Of course, many novice players say they play for fun, but I don’t think that losing money is that funny all the time.

2. Dedicate certain slice of your monthly budget to play Texas Holdem poker and never exceed it. This money is usually called poker bankroll. You must treat your bankroll just as you would treat any money you invest, since you are going to earn money, not lose it.

3. Again, never exceed your bankroll. People who tried to play with money they cannot afford to lose always finish on the losing side. You must eat, pay debts and live your life in many different ways, so don’t play with money you’d need for some other purposes. By the way, if you invest your “scary money” into poker, you’ll never be able to concentrate and play good anyway.

4. Know your skill level and select right tables matching both your skill and your bankroll. As a rule, you must have at least 100 times the minimum bet before getting into the game. This means that for a $1$2 Limit Texas Holdem game, you need to have $100 to play safely. Why is that so? Because this game is series of swings between luck and misfortune. You can lose ten, or even twenty hands in a row and then hit a great pot, but what will you do, if you won’t have enough money to continue playing after 10 losses?

5. Learn more about bankroll management and treat your bankroll wisely. In case if your aim is to become a winning Texas Holdem professional and start earning money for a living, then you have to learn the bankroll management concept.

6. Remember that although you must be confident in your Texas Holdem skills, but you should never get overly confident and underestimate your opponents. This means that you must believe that you’re able to win, but you mustn’t relax and let one of your opponents lure your attention and steal your chip stack.

7. If you feel sleepy, or if you feel you’re tired of playing poker – just leave the game and take your time to relax, rest and recover both your physical and mental abilities to be a serious threat for your opponents. Tired and sleepy players are fish.

8. Always stay disciplined, regardless of the circumstances. Say there are two players that have equal, or nearly equal skill level, but first player is a well-disciplined person and the second one often gets on tilt. Trust me, the second player will always be on the losing side.

9. You must understand the importance of the selection of starting hands. You can find a lot of articles dedicated to this important question on our site and you must learn to select good starting hands before investing serious money into your poker career.

10. Vary your playing style during the game. In case if at least one of your opponents will figure out your standard playing patterns, he will be able to read and exploit you easily, therefore stealing money right from under your nose.
