There’s a difference between a No Limit Texas Holdem cash game from a tournament. It is quite difficult to win in No Limit Holdem tournaments. This is not surprising since people seem to be more skilled and more strategic in their hands and plays.

Usually, a bigger pot is at stake. The players would usually employ and use all their poker skills and knowledge in order to win the game. There are no exact rules on how you would win a tournament. However, knowing the basics in playing Holdem tournaments would give you an edge over your opponents.

What You Should Take Note Of?

Basically, there are three factors that would affect the outcome of a Holdem tournament. These factors include:

1. Starting Hands.
2. Tournament position.
3. Chip stack.
4. Blind sizes.

Tournament Position

Your tournament position plays a great factor in winning the game. In the initial betting round, prior to flops, the most ideal position is the dealer button. This is mostly favorable because you will be able to get an idea how everyone in the table is playing. Thereafter, you can join the game once you have studied the plays and hands. Also, you will be allowed to play hands only after the flop. This gives you an edge over the other players.

If the dealer button is the best starting position, the bubble position is the worst position that you could be in at the end of the tournament. You might not exactly be the worst player or the player with the lousiest hand, but you would be the player “who could have won something”. Meaning, if you could have positioned at least a little higher, you would have won some money. This is the worst position because it is the most frustrating position to No Limit Holdem tournament players.

To avoid being in the bubble position, you should employ all poker strategies that you know. Typically, when players recognize that they could end up in the bubble position, the play gets tighter and tighter. This is the best time to evaluate your opponents’ moves. If there are changes to a particular player’s style, he is most likely to be in a roll not to end up in the bubble position. Players like this should be your focus as they are most likely playing to get their hands on whatever amount of money they could get.
