Basic Texas Holdem Strategy – A Few Pointers

Texas Holdem Strategy can vary greatly depending upon the type of betting structure you are playing. The weaknesses of each type of player are usually more pronounced at No-Limit games than at Limit or Pot Limit games.

At the moment the preferred Texas Holdem strategy for No-Limit games is a form of tight aggressive play. This is because in general it has fewer weaknesses than the other positions. Phil Ivey is often pointed to as a great proponent of tight aggressive play; it is a poker strategy that he has mastered and his mastery allows him to disguise many other types of play.

Because the amount that you can bet is unrestricted in No-Limit games the cost of a badly played hand can be crippling. As such a successful No-Limit Texas Hold em strategy will tend to be tighter than its Limit counter part. When working on your No-Limit Texas Holdem strategy it pays to speculate based on your opponents actions as to the kinds of hands they deem playable. Careful attention to show downs involving this player will help you fine tune your assessments and help you develop a better line of attack.

With No Limit Texas Holdem strategy there should be a distinction made amongst the loose aggressive players. This is because some loose aggressive players play in that style because they don’t know any better but others do so because they know exactly what is going on. An example of a successful loose aggressive player is Gus Hansen.

Only by watching the relative success of the player can you see if they know what they are doing, if they seem to be winning more than they are losing then they should be approached with extreme caution, if they are losing more than they are winning you may well have spotted a sucker.

By adjusting your poker strategy at No-Limit Texas Holdem to best counter the style used by your opponents you can end up playing an overly reactive game. To counter this you also have to think about how your opponents see you. Much of the time at lower limits your opponents will be new to poker and not give you or your play a second thought.

At higher limits your every move is likely to be scrutinised. Because of this as you progress to higher limits you should work on your poker strategy by devoting time to selling a table image whilst you play.

  2. Hi Linda,

The quick answer is yes, it does. But, my experience is that you should play tighter poker online than in real life. When you play online everything goes much faster and you should be careful before making your moves so in case you are unsure of how to act, it’s better to fold and play tight.

In live poker, things take more time and players seem to have less patience and rather take risks with weak cards instead of folding and wait for a better opportunity.
