Knowing When to Quit

This round of Poker Roundtable had Howard Lederer, Jennifer Harman, Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, and Layne Flack. The first thing they talk about staying within their limits.

Chris Ferguson talks about the reason for knowing when to quit is more tied into how you are playing. The reason many of these people start losing lots of money is because they lose focus on their style of play. They get too frustrated on losing and then there game slips.

Phil Ivey says that many people quit too early when winning but stay to long when they were losing. He says many people go broke too often because they are determined to win their money back. He also says that this is his biggest weakness but his biggest strength is that he keeps playing when he is on a role. He can go up to 30 to 36 hours.

Jennifer talks about how when you are winning you need to take advantage of the people losing. This brings up the mental part of the game. They all seem to agree when you get on a role people are often intimidated and you don’t even need to show your cards to win. People get worn down and begin to concede to easily. Phil really hammered this point down.

Howard talks about how playing can start wearing on people over time. Howard says that you could set down rules so you are more comfortable in the game.

Jennifer tells new players that they are allowed to walk away when you are losing. This is because you are always able to go back to the game. This leads to everyone agreeing that you don’t always have to play that next hand. It often times can be beneficial just to walk away so you can regroup.
