No Limit Play Before the Flop
The following video will give you a general introduction about how to play NL Texas Holdem pre-flop. You decision whether or not to play a hand pre-flop is obviously your most important decision as all subsequent actions will stem from this. A lot of factors will go into whether or not you will play a hand. Very seldom do you get thrust in a situation that plays itself, such as getting dealt aces and having someone shove against you.
One thing to remember in Holdem is that each hand is it’s own unique situation. For example, in some cases, you will be dealt a pair of jacks and will end up playing it very aggressively and getting a lot of money into the pot. There are other times where you will actually end up folding that same pair of jacks due to the action that is ahead of you.
One concept that is mentioned briefly is that of position. Position will help you make more decisions in Texas Holdem than you can realize. For example, if you are dealt a pair of eights on the button, how will you play them? Chances are your answer will be, “It depends on how the other players react.” That would be the correct answer. The later position that you have at the table, the better decisions you can make. If you have those eights and are facing no raises, then you will likely raise with that hand. If you have a big raise and a couple of calls or even re-raises ahead of you, you will fold.
Pay careful attention to the section about calling, also known as “limping in”. There are many poker theorist that claim you should never limp into a pot. This video gives some decent tips when to try and limp into a pot.
