WSOP Revamps Player of the Year Point System

The WSOP Player of the Year point system has been one that has been debated for year. After last year, it became obvious that a new points system was needed when Michael Mizrachi won the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship and made the final table of the 2010 WSOP Main Event, yet finished 2nd to a player that won two stud bracelets.

Now, a new POY points system has been instituted based on Bluff Magazines Player of the Year points model. It will have multipliers based on field size and buy-in amount. In addition, the WSOP Main Event will have it own separate points system. Also, every event of the WSOP Europe will be included in the POY points race. The only WSOP events that will not earn points are the Employee’s Event, Ladies Event, and Seniors Event.

“It’s been obvious that our Player of the Year system needed a little bypass surgery,” said Ty Stewart, VP of the WSOP. “BLUFF’s new POY format has been lauded by players as the best and most complete in the industry, so they were natural partners to help us tweak our model. We look forward to watching the excitement play out across all 62 open bracelet events.”

According to Bluff Magazine Editor in Chief Lance Bradley, “We altered the formula only slightly from our own to reflect the buy-in levels and field sizes of WSOP events. We believe the new system increases the credibility of the already prestigous WSOP Player of the Year award.”

Some have speculated that someone could win the WSOP Main Event and win the points title since the WSOP Main Event winner will receive 500 points. Of this Bradley said, “The Main Event was the most difficult part of revamping the Player of the Year system. It’s an entirely different beast but we think we’ve given it the proper treatment without making it so that someone can win Player of the Year simply by taking down the Main Event.”

Past players of the year have included Daniel Negreanu, Jeff Madsen, Frank Kassela and Tom Schneider. For a full breakdown of the new points system, check out Bluff Magazine’s WSOP POY formula page.
